The
Andy K. Wells Hike and Bike Trail is the first ever of its kind within
the City of Killeen.  The first phase of the trail will extend from
38th Street west approximately 2.5 miles along Nolan Creek and will
connect with the Killeen Community Center and the Gilmore Senior
Citizens Center. 

The project was made possible through the generosity of Kenny Wells,
who donated 9.115 acres of land.  In honor of Mr. Wells the City
elected to name the trail after his father the late Andy K. Wells and
any future extensions to this trail system will be perpetually named
the “Andy K. Wells Hike and Bike Trail”.

Of primary importance is that the project will provide an alternative
to pedestrians and cyclists who currently must travel two of the
busiest thoroughfares in the city.  Additionally, it will offer an
opportunity for persons of all ages to exercise, travel and enjoy the
beauty of areas along Nolan Creek. The trail will provide citizens of
Killeen with a health and fitness area never before provided.

The project also provides a pedestrian-activated crossing on 38th
street in the vicinity of Water Street, providing a safety factor for
students traveling to Killeen High School. In addition to the trail the
project will have landscaping, irrigation, and lighting, stretch areas,
a pedestrian bridge, a restroom facility and security cameras.

The trail is part of the region's vision to eventually complete a
series of trails linking two surrounding lakes, Lake Belton and Still
House Hollow Lake.
