Emergency Communication
Red Cross provides rapid communications between families and military personnel regarding
birth announcements, deaths, serious illnesses, breakdowns in childcare, health and welfare reports, or other personal or family problems. If you are located in the Fort Hood area, please call our 24-hour emergency toll-free number at 1-877-272-7337.
To help ensure that your message is passed in a timely manner, make sure your family has your current rank, social security number and military address. Family members back home should call their local Red Cross to request emergency message service.
Financial Assistance
Red Cross provides access to emergency financial assistance after duty hours. During normal duty hours, service members or family members should contact their unit Command Financial Specialists for possible assistance from Army Emergency Relief, phone 254-288-5003.
Crisis Counseling, Information & Referral Services
Red Cross provides confidential assistance with personal and family problems. Information about obtaining compassionate reassignments or hardship discharges is also available. Referrals are made to other agencies when Red Cross is unable to assist.
Health and Safety Services
The Heart of Texas Chapter of the American Red Cross (Waco, TX) offers Health and Safety
Services. Classes and instructors in First Aid/CPR, Lifeguarding, Swimming, Babysitting, HIV/AIDS, and others, are available. You may call 254-776-8362 for information or to register for any of the chapter’s courses.
Disaster Services
Red Cross helps families and communities recover from disasters by providing immediate emergency assistance such as food, shelter, and clothing. These services are provided 24 hours a day at no charge due to the voluntary support of the American people. Please call 1-800-497-4280.
Volunteer Services
Volunteers serve at the Darnall Army Community Hospital, Troop Medical Clinics, Vet Clinic, at the Dental Clinics and as leaders and instructors. We also have a Summer Youth Program for youth age 13-17 with orientations in May or June each year. In association with DENTAC, Red Cross coordinates a Dental Assistant Training Course for military family members. Normally held twice a year, the program depends on the availability of dentists.. Volunteers must work 75 hours before they apply for the class. Limited paid childcare is provided to our volunteers.
Adults who are interested in volunteering are invited to attend a Volunteer Orientation normally held twice monthly at the Red Cross office, Building 8640, Reynolds House (near the Warrior Way Commissary). Please call us for the date and time of the next Orientation at
