A Thanksgiving Note
.jpg)
With the coming of this wonderful season, Fossil Rim would like to take this time to let you know how thankful we are for you, our great supporters. Without your visitation and contributions we would not be able to continue our conservation efforts for the 17 endangered species in our care. While you are spending time with your families this Thanksgiving, remember that these animals are most thankful for your concern and beneficence. You are all welcome to spend some of your family time with us and our ‘animal families’ this fall. Take time to enjoy the cooler weather and turning leaves. If you would like to express your backing of our programs with a donation of your time – we can always use volunteers. To volunteer, e-mail volunteer@fossilrim.org. We are thankful for our volunteers all year.

“Off” season for the tourist is
“on” season for the animals.
Texans have long understood that for a lot of the year we “enjoy” the warm days of late spring, summer, and early fall. However, we at Fossil Rim would like to let you in on a little secret that only a few have begun to understand. This little secret involves what Fossil Rim has to offer in the late fall, winter, and early spring when we experience our cool season. One can visibly notice the effect of that first real cool front on our animals with the resulting increase of activity beyond the normal early and late day movements.

Fall is very much a transition period with the change of foliage color before deciduous trees shed their fabulous fall foliage . Fall is also the breeding season for most of our deer species. Various croaks, bugles, and grunts can be heard as males court females. You will find many migrating birds of all colors and species with some that call Fossil Rim home all winter. Monarch butterflies are also seen in great abundance as they migrate south each fall. Once the leaves are shed for winter, visibility increases beyond what is normal during other seasons making scenic overlooks and animal viewing even better. Animals are more active during the winter as they move throughout much of the day.
And we must not forget that winter offers better viewing opportunities of our native wildlife as well. Roadrunners, squirrels, jackrabbits, cottontail rabbits, wild turkeys, and the whitetail deer are all more active and visible.

Now that you are aware of our little secret, let us let you in on a couple of more reasons to visit in the “off” season. Many visitors have not discovered the benefits of a cool season visit, therefore there is less traffic and a greater sense of solitude making your visit a leisurely, enjoyable drive with nature. Another benefit is taking advantage of our “off season” rates. This not only applies to the scenic wildlife drive, but to our lodgings opportunities as well.
So lets re-cap, more animals, great scenery, no Texas heat, less traffic, and a reduced cost. What more could you ask for? We hope to see you in the new “ON SEASON” at Fossil Rim Wildlife Center. __________________________________
