Texas Driver's License
If you are a new resident of the state and hold a driver's license from another state, Texas law requires you obtain a Texas driver's license within 30 days of establishing residency. If you own a vehicle it must be registered in Texas before you can apply for a Texas driver's license. You must also have proof of insurance when applying for a Texas driver's license. You can apply for a license in Killeen at the Texas Department of Public Safety, 302 Priest Drive, (254) 634-1919, on weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Mon-Fri. You will need to take either a certified copy of your birth certificate or a valid out-of-state driver's license with you. You will be required to pass both a vision test and a written examination. You will need to take a driving skill test if you do not have current Texas or out-of-state license or if you are advancing in class.
To obtain a Texas driver's license you must be 18 years of age or older or you must be at least 16 years of age and have completed a certified driver's education program, including both classroom and "behind the wheel" segments. Anyone under the age of 18 must have proof that they are enrolled in school or have proof of graduation. The Texas Department of Public Safety driver's license office will provide information on taking the driver's license test and, upon request, will supply you with a booklet on Texas driving regulations. The Department of Public Safety driver's license office advises that the best time for "fast Service" is between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. If a road test is required, you must be in before 4:00 p.m. to insure a position, as these are handled on a "first-come first-serve" basis.
If you have moved to Killeen from another city within Texas, be sure to have a new Texas driver's license issued, giving your new address. You must do this at the Department of Public Safety driver's license office within 90 days of relocating.
A Texas driver's license must be renewed every 6 years. It can be renewed at the Department of Public Safety driver's license office designated above.
